Components of Title 1

  • Title 1 reading tutors work with students in small groups.
  • The instructional methods and materials used by tutors are researched based.
  • New books, as well as familiar ones, are used for reading instruction an practice.
  • Students use both Fiction and non-fiction materials.
  • Instruction covers the following areas: Phonemic Awareness and Phonics, reading fluency, expression, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  • Students are taught to write about their reading.
  • Progress reports are issued at the same time as the classroom report card.

Title 1 at BES

  • Title 1 is a federally funded program
  • Title 1 provides reading support for students in grades 1-3
  • It is staffed by certified teachers and paraprofessionals
  • Title 1 provides reading support during a specifically set-aside time of the day.
  • The program is scheduled so that students do not miss any classroom instruction.
  • Reading tutors are supervised by a certified reading/writing specialist.

Title 1 Eligibility

  • A point value is assigned to literacy data for all students at BES
  • Recommendations by classroom teachers are assigned a point value.
  • Homeless or migrant status merits point value too.
  • Points are also assigned for ESOL (English as a second or other language) children.
  • Students with the highest point values are eligible for Title I reading services.
